TEHRAN, November 12 - Secretary General of the World Customs Organization Mikuriya Kunio hailed Iran’s efforts to prevent drug trafficking.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Iran is a forerunner country in battling drug smuggling, he said.
Although Iran is neighbor to countries cultivating traditional kind of drug, it has done well in battling drug and these measures are important and useful for the world.
As to transit of traditional uses of some drugs to Iran from European countries, he said, except traditional kinds of drug mainly found in Iran’s neighboring countries, “We are now facing new and industrial drug mainly produced in Europe and may be sent to all over world.”
Iran spends billions of dollars and has lost thousands of its police troops in the war against traffickers and terrorists. The crackdown has cost Iran more than 700 million dollars over the past two years. Every year, Iran allocates millions to strengthen border security and block the entry of terrorists and drug traffickers into the country.
Strategies pursued by Tehran include digging canals, building barriers and installing barbed wire to seal its borders.
